Celebrate 30 Years Of Nahenahe Hawaiian Music With Ka Himeni | ||||||
Ka Hīmeni 'Ana will celebrate its 30th annual showcase of unamplified nahenahe Hawaiian music on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the historic Hawaii Theatre. Thirty years is a remarkable milestone for a music competition that has stayed true to its traditional roots, despite the passing decades. The competition seeks to perpetuate the traditional Hawaiian nahenahe style of singing amidst a modern world. Ka Hīmeni 'Ana is an opportunity for the public to enjoy music as a form of expression that does not require speakers to be entertaining. The competing groups sing without microphones in sweet, vocal harmony, and play unamplified acoustic instruments, in hopes of achieving the prestigious win and honor. A beloved local event, Ka Hīmeni 'Ana has been a launching pad for winning artists to thrive and become well-known names in the contemporary Hawaiian music scene. Past winners include Holunape, Ho'okena, Pilioha, Ku'uipo Kumukahi, Kanilau and many others. The mission of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame is to promote, preserve, and perpetuate Hawaiian music and hula by celebrating the achievements of significant individuals and groups. |
