The Honolulu Chorale begins their Fall season! | ||||||
The Honolulu Chorale will enter its 49th Season with a new Music Director; Jeremy Wong. Mr. Wong will officially begin his Directorship at The Chorale’s first Fall Season rehearsal on Tuesday, August 26, On O’ahu at the Church of the Crossroad Sanctuary at 1212 University Avenue. Jeremy takes over this position from Don Conover who has conducted The Chorale for the past year as interim Music Director and Joseph McAlister, before him, who successfully led the Chorale for nineteen years. “Being named the next music director is equal parts exciting and terrifying --- the opportunity to create amazing moments and memories are ripe for the picking. On a personal note, the accountability factor is also that much higher,” says Mr. Wong. “There is a quote that goes something like ‘A choir is only as good as its conductor.’ I'm energized and thrilled to see all that we, the Honolulu Chorale, can accomplish together.” In addition to his chorale duties, Mr. Wong is a faculty member at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, a Lecturer at UH West O‘ahu where he leads the UHWO University Chorus and voice. He also holds an appointment at Kapi‘olani Community College as Conductor of the KCC College Chorus, is Section Leader at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu and serves as Associate Director of the Hawai‘i Youth Opera Chorus. Mr. Wong holds a Master of Music in vocal performance from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa studying with Maya Hoover. He also holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts from DePauw University. He performed in the vocal master classes of Sylvia McNair and Dawn Upshaw; and participated in the conducting master classes of Vance George and Rodney Eichenberge. Founded in 1966, The Honolulu Chorale, is one of the longest-performing community choruses in the State of Hawai‘i. Its Members represent the diverse population of our Islands, they come from all walks of life and range in ages from teenagers to octogenarians. The Chorale presents two major concerts and several community events each season. In March, the Chorale sponsors an annual Community Chorus Festival where it showcases variety of Hawaii’s ethnic choral groups and styles. This Fall one of the featured concerts will be The Honolulu Chorale’s Annual Holiday Concert held in December. This years’ concert is entitled “And on Earth, Peace: A Concert of Readings and Carols.” The Chorale has also traveled and performed throughout Hawaii‘s neighboring islands, Europe, Japan and China. A Concert tour to Salzburg and Vienna, Austria is planned for June of 2015. Membership into the Chorale is available to all singers on O’ahu. Currently, openings for singers in all sections are available. Voice placement interviews are required. No formal auditions are needed.
