The cornerstone was laid on December 31, 1879 and marked Hawaii’s status as a modern nation and enhanced the prestige of Hawaii overseas. Iolani Palace served as the royal residence for five Hawaiian monarchies, beginning with Kamehameha III in 1845 and ending with Queen Liliuokalani in 1893. After the monarchy was overthrown, the building was used as the capital building for the State of Hawaii until 1969 and was later restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1978. Iolani Palace is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers guided tours or self-led audio tours. For more information please visit www.iolanipalace.org or call (808) 522-0822. |
