The ‘ukulele has long been synonymous with Hawaii, having become both a popular instrument all over the world and a vital part of the music industry. Shining the spotlight on Hawaii’s favorite instrument, Duke’s Waikiki will host its 11th Annual Duke’s Ukes Contest on Saturday, October 1, 2016, where some of the islands’ best amateur ukulele players will take the stage for a chance to win a Kamaka ‘Ukulele, among other great prizes. Contestants of all ages will compete in two divisions: ‘ukulele instrumental and ‘ukulele and vocals. Each division will feature two age categories. Winners in each ‘ukulele division will be presented with a new Kamaka ‘Ukulele. A “Best Showmanship” award will be given along with additional prizes including Duke’s Waikiki merchandise, gift certificates, and more. Contestants who choose to play a traditional piece of Hawaiian music will also be eligible for the “Ho’okahiko Mele” award. “It’s an honor for us to have the opportunity to perpetuate the Hawaiian culture and the Aloha spirit through ‘ukulele music and the company of ‘ohana,” said Greg Ames, Duke's Waikiki, General Manager. “Each year, we welcome an exceptional level of talent and we’re excited to see what new talent will take the stage this year.” The Duke’s Ukes Contest will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free for spectators.
