Pa'akai Marketplace hosted by Paʻi Foundation
Kaka‘ako, HI (October 6, 2016)—SALT at Our Kaka‘ako is breathing new life into one of Hawai‘i’s time-honored traditions with Pa‘akai Marketplace, a premier monthly series celebrating the culture and spirit of the islands in Our Kakaʻako, an innovative and urban community. This novel approach coordinated by PA'I Foundation brings MAMo Artists, Crafters, and Cultural Practitioners to the retail complex, and will be held every third Friday of the month beginning on Friday, October 21 at 5p.m.

Pa‘akai Marketplace will host artists, crafters and traditional cultural practitioners who will display, share and sell their creations to the community. Participating vendors include—jewelry artists Nalu Andrade of Nā Maka Kahiko and Kaleimaeole Latronic of Kaleimaeole Jewelry, weaver Lufi Luteru of Pawehi Creations, makeup artist Jonathan Freitas for Motives Cosmetics, Jo Ann Ogawa of Hawaiian Totes and Things, and Master Painter Brook Parker.

In traditional times, in the area now known as SALT at Our Kaka‘ako—community members would gather to make pa‘akai, or sea salt, while farmers and fishermen would trade and share other valuable resources. In keeping with these customs, and to pay homage to the history behind this thriving community, SALT at Our Kaka‘ako continues this distinction as the gathering place of the Honolulu area with the Pa‘akai Marketplace.

“We envision the Pa‘akai Marketplace as a gathering place for our community—a social hub for family, friends, artists and cultural practitioners to meet, share and learn from each other,” said Vicky Holt Takamine, Executive Director of the PA‘I Foundation, which will be bringing the Pa’akai Marketplace to SALT at Our Kakaʻako. “In addition to sharing a name, Pa‘akai Marketplace and SALT at Our Kaka‘ako also share a vision—and that vision is to bring the community back to the salt ponds of ancient times.”

“SALT at Our Kaka‘ako is very excited to bring the monthly installments of Pa‘akai Marketplace to our bustling retail center,” said Kelley Nakano, General Manager. “This innovative event highlighting artists, crafters and traditional cultural practitioners is one that you will not want to miss.”

Pa‘akai Marketplace is a free family and pet friendly event that will be held at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako every third Friday of the month, premiering on Friday, October 21 at 5p.m. In addition to great shopping, live music and performances will be held throughout the evening.
